When you are getting ready to move, one of the areas that most people try to avoid getting their hands into is the garage. While packing up your room and your kitchen is stressful and time consuming, cleaning and deciding what to pack from your garage is a lot more tedious.

The garage is the place where most people just throw unwanted items or those things that you won’t need until next season. For instance, now it is Halloween season and while you are creating your scariest pumpkin decorations, by November 1st, you will have to put all these items away until October comes knocking on your door in 2011 once again. Those rollerblades you bought determined to exercise but that you never used, yes, those are most likely thrown away in your garage. You will also be able to find your kid’s old toys, the old wall cabinet, and that vintage grandfather’s clock that you have no idea what to do with. And, let’s not even mention your collection of car equipment and tools that you have flying everywhere.

Whether you are moving yourself or hiring a full service moving company, it is not only dangerous to pack some items; it’s also illegal. Anything that is flammable – gasoline that you use in the lawn mower, lighter fluid or propane for the grill, paint thinners and even car batteries – should not be packed for your move. The best thing that you can do to protect yourself – and anyone else who is moving your possessions – is to contact a local recycling center or solid waste district to learn more about disposing of them.

Because it is unsafe to pack gasoline and similar substances, when you are getting ready to clean and pack your garage, you need to make sure that you drain the gas from your lawnmower and other lawn tools. You will also find that it’s a lot easier to transport your lawnmower when it has been cleaned thoroughly, so before you pack things up, clean the grass and other lawn waste from them. Use tape or rope to tie the handles of rakes and other garden tools; once your hose has been completely drained of water, you’ll want to roll it up, and either tie it securely or place it in a box of garden supplies.

For other, smaller garage items like garden hoes, tools and similar items, you will want to be sure that you have packed the items in boxes that are securely taped. You’ll want to be sure that you are not over-packing the boxes and you will also want to make sure that each box is labeled with its contents.

Similarly, you need to ensure that you outdoors furniture is safely packed and hauled- especially if you have an outdoor table that has a glass tabletop that you want to be sure arrives in one piece. You need to determine the amount of items that you will be moving in order to determine the size of the moving truck you will be using. If you are using self service moving, remember that you will be doing the packing and saving yourself the hassle of driving. Still, you should seriously consider cleaning and donating that bicycle you are no longer using instead of carrying and throwing it in your new garage.
