This week we will discuss RankBrain SEO and RankBrain in general. So Google published this algorithm or component of their algorithm a while ago, but there have been questions for a long time: Can we really do RankBrain SEO? Is it even one thing? Is it possible to optimize specifically for this RankBrain algorithm?I’m going to talk a little bit about how RankBrain works so that we have an overview and we’re all on the same page about it. Google has continued to disseminate more and more information through interviews and comments on what the system does. There are some things that can potentially change in our SEO strategies and tactics around it but I will show why optimizing for RankBrain is probably the wrong way to frame it.What does RankBrain actually do?So what does RankBrain actually do? A query is sent to Google. Historically, typically Google would use an algorithm, probably the same algorithm, at least they said sort of the same algorithm across the table historically to determine which pages and sites to show. There are a bunch of different rank entries, which we’ve talked about several times here on Whiteboard on Friday. But if you search this query today, what Google says is with RankBrain, they will take any query that comes and RankBrain will basically be a query interpretation template. He’ll look at the words in this query. It is potentially going to look at things like location or customization or other things. We’re not quite sure if RankBrain uses them, but it certainly could. It interprets these queries and then it will try to determine the intention behind the query and make the ranking signals that are applied to the results appropriate to that real query. So here’s what it means. If you search today – I did this search on my mobile device, I did it on my desktop device – for “best Netflix shows” or “Best shows on Netflix” or “What are good shows Netflix “,” What to look for on Netflix “, notice a template here? The five of these searches are basically asking for the same thing. We could argue and say” what to look on Netflix “could be More focused on the cinema than shows, which could be more TV or episodic series centered. It’s good. But these five are essentially, “What should I watch on Netflix?”

Now RankBrain will help Google understand that each of these queries, despite the fact that they use slightly different words and phrasings or completely different words, with the exception of Netflix, that they should all be answered by the Content or the same kind of content. This is where Google, where RankBrain is determining the researcher’s intention. Then, Google will use RankBrain to basically say, “Now what signals are good for me, Google, to improve or push down for those particular queries?”

SignalsSo we’re going to be super simplistic, hyper-simplistic and imagine that Google has this domain of some signals, and for that particular query or set of queries, one of these, that …Matching keywords is not that important. So less than, not super important here.Linking diversity, neither here nor there.Anchor text, it does not matter too much, neither here nor there.Fresh, very, very important. Why is freshness so important? Well, because Google has seen models before, and if you view Netflix shows that were on the service a year ago, two years ago, three years ago you are no longer relevant. It does not matter if you have a lot of good links, lots of di
